June 2016 Meeting Recap

Our June meeting was a great success! Thank you to Katie for leading a paper piecing demo, many of our members completed their blocks! We had some wonderful submissions for our Botanical Gardens Challenge, very excited to see everyone's interpretations! Our June BOM is the Wheel of Fortune block, templates can be found here. Sharon would like two shades of bright, primary colors. Backgrounds are white/white on white/offwhite.

The guild decided upon the Lemoyne Star as our theme for our next Quilt Show with the Sewing & Quilting Expo at Lakeland next spring. We started a Pinterest page for ideas and tutorials. If you would like to 'pin' to our board, send Ellen your Pinterest email and she will add you to the group.  At our July meeting we will have a demonstration of how to make the block in the traditional and cheater methods.  Our theme is to take the Lemoyne Star block and modernize it. Change it up: colors, scale, piecing, etc.  The next MQG webinar is perfect for inspiration for our show: Making Traditional Modern. Members can read more and register here. The webinar is June 22nd, which will be recorded to be viewed at a later date if needed. We originally were going to have our July meeting as just the fun swap and Lemoyne  demo. However, I'm sure you all have seen at this point the news from the OrlandoMQG. National has now assisted them in their call and they are asking for heart blocks and quilts to donate to the victims and families from this past month's tragedy. We have decided to open up the July meeting as a Sew Day as well. You can sew heart blocks, you can sew blocks into quilts from finished blocks, you can cut Backings or Bindings. Or you can stay to sew a project that you need help with or just need to finish. Either way we would love everyone to stay and sew. May 2016 Meeting Recap

Welcome to our May Recap! We had a wonderful meeting with great show and tells.  Congrats to Katie for being on WFLA Daytime, talking about modern quilting! You can watch her segment on her website HERE.  Ann shared her new job quilting for Florida Quilting Center within Happy Apple Quilts, super excited for her! For our next guild challenge, we need to choose the theme for our next Sewing Expo Quilt Show!  Members at the meeting agreed upon the concept of taking a traditional block and making it modern. Altering it, making it larger, reversing it, the ideas are plentiful. But we have to choose a block first! Bring a print out of the block to the June meeting for members to choose from. A black and white photocopy is just fine, but make sure it is on paper so we don't have to pass a lot of phones around!  Members chose this so everyone can pick their own color scheme, but we do want to stick with bright, modern colors and fabrics. Have a fabric you want to use and not sure if it will 'fit'? Bring it the meeting and we can see!

Member be sure to check your emails from national!  The class catalog is supposed to be sent tomorrow, June 1st, for QuiltCon in Savannah on February 23-26.  If you decide to go, get your hotel early! Bring your sewing machine in June! Katie will be leading a Paper Piecing Demo at our June meeting.  Get the fabric requirements here.  I will show how to work the national MQG site, since its been a while since we used it. Sharon will share her block for our BOM.  Early reminder that July is our Holiday party! We will have to discuss snacks for sharing. And bring a handmade present to swap in July, you may  need to start sewing something now! Wrap it up like it's Christmas, or better yet wrap it in fabric! See you all soon.

Tampa MQG at the Lakeland Sewing Expo 2016!

This past March our guild had their very first quilt show, at the Lakeland Sewing and Quilting Expo!  We were incredibly lucky and honored with the spots for our quilts to hang, right in the main entrance!  Our guild decided to create our own "Think Spring" Challenge, creating a quilt that each member found a relationship to spring.  As our members walked by we secretly listened in to other quilters admiring our work.  We even had a few people ask for us, to learn more about our specific guild.  We hung and took down the exhibit ourselves, learning with great assistance from the ladies of the expo and the convention hall.Glad we were able to share our take on modern quilting with other quilters in the area, and learn more about us! We were even included in the program.  And by luck's chance, our QuiltCon Group Charity Quilt arrived back to us two days before the show.  It was able to be our star, right by registration.

March & April 2016 Meeting Recap

Tampa MQG Members decided to work on a charity quilt early this year!  Our guild created a quilt for the Love Quilt Project.  Their base design for the quilt asked to create a log cabin pattern.  The center squares were drawn by children from Cardinal Elementary in Springfield, Virgina.  Our guild decided to create a rainbow design, everyone bringing in bright scarps to use.  We were able to construct the entire top in a meeting and one member offered to quilt for us. It is now on its way to Virgina, and soon after to Africa.





Our April meeting took us outside before the full on Florida heat sets in.  We took a field trip to the USF Botanical Gardens.  We have decided to have a new guild challenge, with inspiration from the gardens.  Our June meeting will be full of color as we see our members inspirations come to fabric.

February 2016 Meeting ReCap

We want to thank everyone for coming to our new meeting location at the Jimmie B. Keel library.  We know our meeting location cannot be the best for everyone possible, but we hope this creates a more central location easier for most.  We are booked at the library for March 12, April 9, and May 14. Thanks to Anita for booking us in!  We hope to grow our members and do more sew days, either making charity quilts, learning new techniques, or challenges! We had fun this month learning tessellation from Flo.  Thanks to Flo for handing out the flannel squares to create her shamrock-esque blocks for next month!  Dianne is up for our March BOM.  We do need a volunteer for April's block. We received nearly all of our quilts to hang at the expo.  A few last minute sleeves need to hang and then we will be ready!  I am super excited for our exhibit next month at Lakeland Sewing Expo.

In March we will be creating the blocks for our Love Quilt Project.  Our members decided to create a rainbow of stripes with the children's art blocks.  Remember for next meeting to bring BRIGHT colors of fabrics for the strips.  Katie offered to bring her AccuQuilt Go to help cut the 2 1/2" strips we will be using.  As it is we will need the most of our 'white' areas.  We will be using white, tone on tone white, and low volume prints for these sections. Bring some fabric precut so we can get started as soon as we are there!

For those coming next month and want to let others know if they are bringing an iron/ironing board, extension cables, and etc please let us know in the Facebook event group page. Remember lots of fabrics for next month, bring your sewing machines, and supplies!  Let's see if we can get a quilt top done in three hours!

January 2016 Meeting ReCap

Welcome back to all those who joined us this month, we hope we have a grand quilty year! Some big news: MEETING LOCATION CHANGING. Due to our member size, we will no longer be meeting at Crafty Threads.  We want to thank Barb for all of her time and space at Crafty Threads, for letting us meet there for over the past year.  However leadership has decided we need more space!  We will now be meeting at the Jimmie B Keel Library on Bearrs Ave. For our longer lasting members, we are returning to where we used to meet!  In the past this was a more central meeting location, which we hope it returns to being. The library community rooms gave us ample space for working and having fun. Meeting times and days remain the same.

At our January meeting we began collecting quilts for our show at the Lakeland Sewing Expo in March. We have 13 quilts promised so far.  Let's hit 20!  Every member is welcome to submit a quilt to hang at the show. Your quilt must have a hanging sleeve on the back. When submitting the quilt we will give you a submission form to sign. In addition, please email Ellen BY the February meeting your quilt name, your name, and a description of the quilt.  We need to get the label information to the expo a month in advance of the show.

UFOs are now CEOs, Completely Executed Objects! If you didn't bring your fat quarters for our CEO game, still bring them!  Our first drawing for completing these will be given at the April meeting.  Bring as well any old projects you wish to swap with other members. I hope the new year brings you all lots of quilting time and fresh starts, see you next month at the library!

November 2015 Meeting ReCap

It's December. It may not look like it or feel like it, but the year is quickly coming to a close. Our guild accomplished a lot this year and I am very proud of where we have come. We have grown in size about 10 members this year, which to us is a huge percentage! Thank you to all who have continued to support each other with our guild and quilting. Our QuiltCon Charity quilt went so well together. We donated 64 pillowcases to Miles for Smiles and at our last count had 9 quilts for Project Linus.

At the November meeting we voted in our officers for 2016. President: Ellen A. VicePresident: Flo M. Treasurer: Anita A. Secretary:  Sandy M. In the coming week we will be paying our renewal with National.

We have thought of some fun new guild activities for us to do in 2016. There were 13 of 19 UFOs completed by our members this year. The rest of those can roll on over, if you wish!  We will continue the UFO Challenge and have a fat quarter as your ante for each UFO submission. Going along with the UFO Challenge, we have decided to do a UFO Swap.  For the January meeting, along with your list of UFOs, bring a UFO that you just don't want to look at anymore!  Something you started and have no desire to finish.  We will swap with other members and have a secondary challenge to complete or re-purpose the UFO in 2016. We also want to introduce Quilting Resolutions.  Instead of focusing on the past, lets look to the future!  What do you want to learn? What do you want to accomplish?  We will pass slips around at the meeting for you to fill out about your quilty hopes for 2016.  We will use these to help develop content and activities for our meetings.   As always, any of our guild activities are completely voluntary.  But we do want to remind you of our Think Spring Quilt Show in the Lakeland Sewing Expo!  Please bring finished quilts to the January meeting so we can have a final count to give the expo. Lakeland will be making the display signs for us.  I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday with lots of quilting!

October 2015 Meeting ReCap

October was a great, fun meeting where we all tried something new! Improv! Emily and Adelle initially gave us this idea for the group to try improv, based on Victoria Findley Wolfe's 15 Minutes of Play book.  Sandy, Barb, and Ellen shared their improv experience with Sherri Lynn Wood, which was earlier that week.  Some members felt like they didn't know what they were doing. Some loved the freedom. Many wished for a ruler! The Mimosas helped loosen everyone up! It was great fun to get out of our comfort zone and try something new.  We hope to see what becomes of these pieces! Project Linus quilts perhaps?

September Meeting Recap

We had a great turn out at our September meeting. We had one guest and one new member joined us.  It was a big sew day for us.  Thank you to all that came and sewed pillowcases. As a group we had 12 members creating pillowcases and ended with a grand total of 64! This is three times the amount we made last year.  In 2017, think we can sew 100??

Our current president, Ellen A. quilted our QuiltCon charity quilt. It received many oohs and aahs! It is now off to our member Adelle A. for binding! The quilt itself is not due until early next year, but we hope to see it complete next month. Our label and sleeve are already prepared for the quilt.

August 2015 Meeting - Quilt Con Charity Quilt Creation

At our August Tampa MQG meeting we created the quilt top for our 2015 QuiltCon Charity Quilt.  At the July meeting we discussed the fabric choices and style of the Improv quilt we wanted to create.  We decided to work with an alternate grid, assigning grid spaces to members.  We decided to stick to a Star theme, whatever that meant to members! Most decided have a 'wonky' approach to their star block.  A few members were fortunate to go to the previous QuiltCon and see the Charity Quilts as a whole.  They remembered that quilts that did not use white as the background color really stood out.  The guild decided to use the Aqua fabric as the main background element for this year's quilt.

For the August meeting members brought in all of our star blocks and we built the top based on our original sketch layout.  We looked to see where we could add a few new blocks for members that missed the previous meeting. We had a 'Magic Quilter' guide us in piecing the blocks together to form the top.  Many members learned how to sew Partial Seams for the first time.



While half of the  members created the top, the others started using the left over fabrics to create a pieced back.  Crafty Threads, the quilt shop where we meet donated three yards of the aqua to help fill in the holes of the background quilt top. Our current president, Ellen A. volunteered to quilt the top. We will hopefully see how it turned out at the September meeting!

July 2015 Meeting

Thanks for everyone that came to our fun Christmas in July meeting! We of course had some business items to discuss, such as collecting the midterm dues. But it was a great party of a day! Adelle showed the finished quilt for Flood Texas with Love charity project, blocks collected the previous month.

We were able to give Barb from Crafty Threads our surprise thank you quilt to her, for letting us meet at Crafty Threads! This was a secret BOM we started in February and the secret never got out! Good job everyone!

We had our biggest swap table to date! And then enjoyed swapping handmade gifts for our fun Handmade White Elephant.

March 2015 Meeting

Project Linus Charity Quilt!

Our guild decided to try something fun with one of our BOMs.  Normally, in our guild one member selects a block for the month.  All members make the block and return it to the member the following month.  For January however we decided to try something a bit different. We selected a simple block, the churn dash, and had it floating on a 12" x 12" square. All members were to make the block in their own colors. But this time, to quilt it as well! We returned our Quilt-As-You-Go panels in February and then combined the panels to create a quilt at the meeting. Hence, the fun patchwork-lattice backing. One member took the quilt home to bind. We were able to see the finished quilt at our March meeting, for Project Linus. 

Dali Museum Trip

In September of 2014, our guild took a field trip the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Pete, FL. It was a beautiful day out and many of us had never visited the new location of the museum.  The museum contained the permanent collection of Dali's work ranging in size from a standard portrait to wall size masterpieces.
 


We went to the museum for inspiration and found many areas to build from.  Dali used color, design, and perspective all in amazing ways.

There was also a special exhibit on display, Marvels of Illusion.  We saw a quilt in the making!

After our trip, we created a mini challenge.  Based on your inspirations from the museum and Dali, create a mini! Here are some of the entrants from our guild. Everyone, even members who were unable to come to the museum enjoyed it. We hope to make a museum/field trip of some sort each year with a mini challenge.

Charity Quilt - Project Linus

The national Modern Quilt Guild announced a challenge, a Charity Quilt! If guilds contributed their time and talents, the quilt will hang at QuiltCon 2015! We asked our guild if they wanted to participate and everyone agreed.  The Tampa Modern Quilt Guild had already completed great charity work during the past year.  The guild donated an afternoon and created 20+ pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer.  The guild also chose Project Linus as our designated charity for the year and donated 14 quilts to our local chapter.

Adding on a group quilt excited everyone.  We had a block of the month going for our guild so we decided to set one month for Charity blocks.  Everyone was allowed to make as many blocks as they liked, using the modern quilt guild colors. Our only stipulation was the finished block size being 6" or 12" so the blocks would fit together easily.

Everyone brought in their blocks to our October meeting and we designed the quilt together.  The major elements were all arranged and put together at our meeting.  Our guild decided to work with improv design, and not focus on a grid work.

Our current President Ellen Ault and Secretary Sandy MacWilliam took the pieces home to finish the quilt top. We had some leftover blocks and originally planned for a piece back. However, after figuring out the math and tricky piecing seams to get the top completed, an executive decision was made. They bought an extra wide backing to put it on! Our current Vice President, Katie Ringo volunteered to do the quilting on her home HQ Sweet Sixteen. She said it was like wrestling a giant ball of fiber.

Bringing the quilt back to our final meeting of the year in November, we added a fun striped binding and surveyed our work.  Seeing that our guild is relatively small but growing fast, we all are quite pleased with the final result. A few members will be able to go to QuiltCon and take pictures of it hanging. When it returns it will be donated to Project Linus as well.

October 2014 Meeting Minutes

Tampa Modern Quilt Guild

October 11, 2014

We had a packed house today, with many visitors, of which we gained new members.  Welcome!

Visitors today:  Patti French, Jan Gerhart, Carol Tricka, Melissa Mathis, Deana Sola, Patty Hanson, Becky Mathis, Dianne Tanello, Flo McGee, Lisa Aubrey.  (I apologize for any misspelling of names)

Today, we received blocks that everyone made for the QuiltCON charity challenge.  We designed a quilt utilizing them.  Ellen and Sandy took it home to finish the piecing.  Katie agreed to quilt it.  Adele is making the binding and we will all sew part of the binding at the November meeting to finish the quilt.  It is due to MQG before February 2015 and will hang at the QuiltCON.  Can’t believe it is almost queen size with the minimum size requirement from MQG. 

Today also was our “stuff” exchange.  Lots of fun stuff came and went.  We even had shoppers come and look over our “stuff” and take some, too.  It was a fun event.

Terri shared information about a Flickr group called Add-a-Border Block Swap.  Dustin Cecil runs it.  It is a form of round robin.  You send in a block, receive another one, add a border and then send it back in.  Eventually, your block is returned to you with borders added. 

Current challenge is our Dali challenge, due at the November meeting.  A small project based on what was your inspiration at the Dali Museum.  We saw Anita’s pillow, with triangles and a mustache, how fun. 

Our Project Linus quilts are due at the November meeting, also.  Ellen has the labels for you to use on your quilt.

Block of the Month for October is for Terri.  She is using one from Tula Pink’s 100 Blocks Quilt Book.  Directions and color request are up on our Facebook page.

August 9, 2014 Meeting Minutes

Tampa Modern Quilt Guild

August 9, 2014

Our Tampa MQG flyers are on Facebook, so you can download and print to take to any quilt shop that Ellen hasn’t already.  Flyers are at Crafty Threads, Happy Apple Quilts, Keep Me In Stitches Carrollwood, Scrap and Sew.  Happy Apple is providing a 10% discount with your membership card.

Our September meeting will be at Dali Museum.  We will have a pixel challenge following this meeting.  Arrive at 10AM, have lunch either at the Museum or somewhere around it, and have our Sew & Share at lunch.

Quilt CON has 3 challenges:

1. Panasonic Bias Tape Appliqué.  Minimum size is 36 inches square.  You must make your own bias tape.
2. Michael Miller Spring Cotton Couture. You sign up as an individual online with the national MQG  and they send you the featured fabrics.  Any fabrics you add must be MM from Spring Cotton Couture or any of its solids.  National is saying, only request the fabric if you plan to create and enter the challenge. 
3. Local group challenge, to create a Charity Quilt using the colors of the MQG logo, with white and grey.  A file is posted on our facebook page containing color references to use.  We will be making either 12 inch or 6 inch finished blocks, using an alternate grid work pattern.  Bring to the October meeting, and we will then design our quilt from our blocks, collectively put it together, and have someone take it home to quilt.  At the November meeting, we will bind it and ready to be sent off to Austin for the Quilt CON in February. 

October meeting is our swap meeting, to bring in quilting/sewing supplies we no longer use and can swap with others. 

November meeting we will collect our Linus Quilts.

Block of the Month.  Everyone brought in the economy blocks for Katie.  Next block is for Sandy.  She demonstrated how to make the disappearing hourglass block.  She provided the “I Like You” 10 inch fabric square for the background, and you complete it with a bright or novelty fabric.

Demos: 

Ellen showed her cook book holder that she uses to keep quilt books open.  It is cheaper than having your books cut and spiral bound.

Adele showed her paper piecing with freezer paper.  Fascinating, that you don’t sew on the line, you fold the freezer paper and sew next to the fold, after you are done, you just lift off the freezer paper and use it again.

July Meeting Minutes

Tampa Modern Quilt Guild  July 12, 2014

Welcome back some folks and new folks to our group.  In attendance, Ellen A, Sandy, Ann, Katie, Kim, Ellen S, Sara, Linda, Adelle, Emily.

We have a new logo, thank you Katie for designing the Tampa skyline with hexies, terrific.

Dues for the year are due, $25.

Blocks of the Month:

Everyone brought in the red and white quilty cross blocks for Ann.  Katie gave us all a paper piecing Economy Block as her choice.

Michael Miller Challenge:

What a great job by everyone.  Katie did a Dresden appliqué, called Hop Scotch Lane.  Ann created orange peels.  Sandy made sun rise/sun set.  Ellen A made Curvy Mammoth or Curvy MF, its affectionate name.  Emily made Improv Pinwheels.  Adelle created Taking Shape.  Everyone shared their design story and how the quilt changed during the process.  We voted, and a tie between Katie and Adelle.  Katie won a package of batting and Adelle received a fat quarter bundle.  Congratulations to everyone and their quilts.

Katie will create a link on Facebook to the blogs and Instagram.

Show & Tell:

Area Info:

It was mentioned that Carol Friedlander would be at Inspire in Plant City on July 23 for a trunk show.  Her architectural fabrics are being made again. 

Shop Hops in the area, Row by Row, a multi-state shop hop.  Toscana Blending, with 37 shops across Florida.

Mass Drop online offers a way for people to collectively purchase items of all types, including fabric and other crafting items.  Check them out. Current drop is the Patchwork Threads T-Shirts!

Next Guild Project:

Moving our outing trip to our September date.  Crafty Threads is hosting a huge Konkerr Cancer event in September, so a perfect time for us to explore and find inspirations for a small project.  May be visiting the Dali museum. Consensus was the chiluly and glasst Spot may still be too ‘hot’ to visit.  We learned that the Dali museum is no charge to Bank of America credit card holders on the first w/e of the month.

Next meeting:  Crafty Threads, 10A – 3P, August 9.  Demos:  Katie & basting, Ann & binding, Adelle & freezer paper piecing.  Any other ideas of small demos, please bring them! Need help on a project? Bring it!  Sara will be the next Block of the Month.  Should be a fun meeting and learning session.

b.      We will start a topic on the Facebook page to post your ideas. 

c.       Your logo design for us can be anything that you like, but do stick to the ‘square’ format.

d.      If you do not know how to use any software, you can draw your idea and we will have someone else create a digital version for you!

e.      Please upload your design(s) by the July meeting for us to vote on at that meeting.

8.       Community Field Trip –

a.       To help bring more community between our members we have brought up the idea of visiting the Chihuly exhibit and Hot Spot Hot Spot Glass studio in St. Pete for the August meeting.  Those present were in favor.  Visiting the museums will be a great inspiration on color and design, which we talked about turning into a mini pillow cover challenge for the following month.

b.      We need at least ten members to confirm to be able to get the discounted group rate.  Please confirm the August event date if you can come by the July meeting so we can order tickets. Group rate will be ~$16.25 per peson.  We will confirm the final price as the date approaches.

c.       Topics also included the florida Botancial Gardens as a possible trip in the cooler months such as January/February

9.       Block of the Month

a.       8 blocks turned in for Emily’s block.  Ann gave the pattern for her block the Quilty Cross. She wants a white solid background with a red print.

10.   Charity Sewing Day – ConKerr Pillowcases

a.       As a group we sewed 21 pillowcases for Con Kerr!  Congratulations! Remember that Crafty Threads is doing a pillowcase promotion. If you bring in 3 finished pillowcases/kits/ or yards of fabric by July 26^th you will receive a $5 chip to Crafty Threads.

May Meeting Minutes

8 Members present at Inspire Quilt Shop on May 10th.

The official Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Challenge deadline has been extended to July 25th.  We will vote for our guild members creations at our July meeting, July 12th at Inspire Quilt Shop.

International Quilt Festival is welcoming modern quilt entries to submit quilts to their show.  Quilts must be at least 36" x 36". Quilts can move on to QuiltCon if person wants to submit to both. Entries open May 30th. http://www.callforentriesmodernquilts.com/

QuiltCon classes are supposed to be announced at the beginning of June.  Can also volunterr to work part of the show but needs to apply be end of MAy.  Apply through QuiltCon.com

July marks the new calendar year for the guild and new officers must be selected.  Officers will be voted for in the June meeting, officially taking control in July.  Volunteers as of the May meeting are as follows:  Ellen for President, Katie for Vice President, Sara for Treasurer, and Sandy for Secretary.  Emily has offered to run our official elections at the June meeting. If anyone else wants to run for an office, please be sure to attend our June meeting and speak up!  You can email us ahead of time as well if you are interested in being more involved with our guild.

Dues will also be collected at the June meeting, for $25 per member.  Cash or check payable to the Tampa Modern Quilt Guild.

Inspire Quilt Shop news: now an offocial Quilts of Valor drop off and service.  In September will have a Miles for SMiles event for ConKerr Cancer.  Inspire is running their own fabric P & B Challende, the Flying Sweetly line.  Quilts will be judged in the store during the shop hop motnhs.  Quilts can be marked for sale in the store as well.  See store for the beautiful fabric and challenge requirements.

We collected 8 blocks for inaugural Modern Block of the Month!  Emily's block is next using white, charcoal, mustard, or teal colors. She gave the instructions at the meeting but will also add to the site.  June's BOM will be Ann's choice.

Ellen and Sandy shared their trip to Paducah and all of the amazing quilts and shopping that was seen!

Note for Modern Insta Bee-ers.  In using the ninja star block, their is a correction in sizing/cutting.  Do look it up!

Our guild decided to complete 15 quilts for the Project Linus charity by our November meeting.  We will create a group label to place on the back of the blankets. No official size requirements, but they do look for older children and boy quilts since the majority gifted are babies and girl quilts. http://www.projectlinus.org/

The guild also decided June will be a charity sew day for ConKerr Cancer.  We will sew as many pillowcases as we can at our June meeting in Crafty Threads. Please RSVP for the June meeting and if you are staying to sew so we can be sure to set the room to proper sewing space. You will need 1/3 yd of the border fabric and 3/4 yd of the main pillowcase fabric.  Sandy and Ellen bought lots of pillowcase fabric in Paducah and will bring it to share.  But we do need border fabric to go with the main prints.  Solids, Tone on Tones, Stripes/Polka Dots, etc.  We need the calming side!
