At our February meeting, we met at Inspire Quilting & Sewing in Plant City, a lovely quilt shop with lots of beautiful space for us to sew in. We had six members in attendance at this meeting, as well as two visitors from the Orlando MQG.
We discussed the upcoming Original Sewing Expo in Lakeland March 14-16, the Madrona Road challenge currently underway, as well as the upcoming evening mixer planned tentatively for 2/26. We also discussed setting some basic bylaws for the guild and a steering committee for this task was gathered.
Our next meeting is scheduled for 3/9 at the Jimmie B Keel Library. The JBK Library is currently under construction and will be for the remainder of this year, so they are limiting the use of meeting rooms, so we may meet more often at Inspire, as they have offered to host future meetings in their spacious classroom.

The Madrona Road Challenge
Violet Craft's latest collection for Michael Miller Fabrics, Madrona Road, is the focus of the newest challenge hosted by the Modern Quilt Guild. Within our local guild, the guidelines for participating in the challenge are quite simple: you can only add solid fabrics (or additional Madrona Road prints) to what you receive from the guild, and you must make something with a quilted element to it. A quilt, a quilted pillow, quilted tote bag, you choose! To participate in the challenge and receive some of the fabric provided to us for the challenge, you must be present at our January meeting and Sew Day, to be held January 19th at 11 a.m. For more meeting details and to RSVP, check our Facebook group right here.

Our December Guild Meeting
Thanks to everyone who made it out to our December meeting! We had a really great turnout, with nine of us in attendance, and I think fun was had by all :)

At the meeting, we discussed the current guild challenge, the Negative Space challenge, and collectively decided to put the challenge on hold for the time-being, due to guild members' time constraints and the impending Madrona Road challenge, sponsored by Michael Miller Fabrics. Stay tuned for more information about the Madrona Road challenge, including sign-ups and details, coming soon, as well as a revival of the Negative Space Challenge some time in 2013.
We had a wonderful amount of projects to see for Sew & Share this month, from beautiful English paper piecing to applique and string piecing and so forth. Unfortunately, the pictures I took seem to have gotten eaten by my camera's memory card. I'm reformatting is as I type this, so hopefully next month, we'll have photos to share.
We also chatted about ideas for the guild over the next year, since 2013 is merely a month away. Ideas ranged from sewing days with a certain technique or focus, like free motion quilting or foundation paper piecing, a day or weekend guild retreat, a block swap or an add-a-border block project, a swap with another modern quilt guild, and so forth. There's definitely plenty of ideas to get us rolling into 2013.
I hope to see at our next meeting. Cheers!

February Guild Meeting & Sew Day
Mark your calendar - on February 9, 2013 at 10:00 am, we'll have our February meeting and Sew Day.
Bring an recent finished project or work-in-progress to share with your guild friends, and stay along with your sewing machine and sew with us for a while! We'll be meeting at Inspire Quilting & Sewing in Plant City for February, they've been kind enough to invite us to use their classroom. If you haven't been there before, you're in for a treat, the folks at Inspire are not only welcoming and hospitable but kind and funny as well. I hope to see you there!
We'll start the guild meeting shortly after 10am, and the Sew Day can go as long as you'd like, as the shop is open until 6. There's plenty of wonderful restaurants in downtown Plant City for lunch and snacks, and there's also a small kitchen adjacent to the classroom, if you'd like to bring a dish to share or snack/drink for yourself.

The Negative Space Challenge
Our next challenge: The Negative Space Challenge
What is negative space? In basic terms, negative space is the space around and between the focal point of an image, work of art, or quilt. In quilts, it tends to not only surround our quilt blocks but is often also a part of the blocks themselves. Negative space is often a key element of composing modern quilts, and is useful in defining the focal part or parts of a quilt. In quilts with busy fabrics or intricate piecing, negative space is also important, for providing the eye a place to rest and therefore increasing the appeal of a quilt in a subtle way.
Negative space can also be a key element of a quilt design. Rather than making a repeating block pattern, many modern quilters "float" a block or blocks on a quilt top using lots of negative space, or create various improv pieces that they then separate with lots of negative space. Take a look at the examples and inspiration below, and see how the negative space enhances each quilt...
Our next challenge will run through our January meeting, and the challenge is simple: make a quilt top using negative space. It can be a small quilt top, a large one, whatever you like. September Block Workshop and Challenge Winner
Congratulations to Carol for winning our first guild challenge, the Name Tag Challenge. Carol made a great nametag using patchwork and fabric markers, and she won a lovely fat quarter bundle of Dear Stella's Bukhara collection.
The September Block Workshop went very well, with six of us in attendance and lots of sewing completed! We will work some more on our blocks for this charity quilt at our next meeting, in October, scheduled for Saturday October 20th at 12pm.
